Collection: Barberry Products

Barberry (Berberis vulgaris) is closely related to Oregon Grape (Berberis nervosa/Mahonia). Both contain berberine powerful alkaloid. It has a long history of traditional use as a folk remedy for digestive disorders, heartburn and various other ailments.

Barberry has been extensively used throughout many traditional medicine systems, most notably by the Native Americans, Egyptians and in Ayurveda.

The berries are edible. They are quite sour, with a sharp flavor, and very high in vitamin C. The berries are popularly used in Middle Eastern dishes, especially as an addition to cooked rice, vegetable, and chicken dishes. They are also used to make jams and jellies.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, barberry is considered a strongly downward moving herb.
